Glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a progressive optic nerve disease with gradual deterioration of nerve fibres resulting in loss of peripheral visual field. It commonly presents without any symptoms at both low or high intraocular pressure. It can “steal“ your vision insidiously. Glaucoma is the first cause of blindness in Hong Kong and one of the leading causes of blindness in the world.

Classification of Glaucoma

Based on the anatomy, time of onset and causes etc, it can be classified into different categories e.g. acute vs chronic, open vs closed angle, primary vs secondary. This may affect the treatment modalities. For acute glaucoma, the patient usually suffers from acute blurring, halo, eye pain, headache or even vomiting.

Visual Field test and Optical Coherent Tomography are the basic investigations to confirm the diagnosis of glaucoma.

Topical glaucoma eye-drops are the usual treatment. However, it may have side effects in long run. If the disease cannot be well-controlled, tradition surgery will be the next step. Tradition surgeries include trabeculectomy and glaucoma implant.

Due to the advancement of technology, some new laser machines e.g. Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, micropulse transcleral cyclophotocoagulation or minimal invasive glaucoma surgeries take an important role in management of glaucoma. These new treatment options facilitate speedy recovery.

Please consult your ophthalmologist for your specific condition as all the treatment should be personalised for each patient.
